How to Make Your Home Brighter

Some simple tips that will help you make your home brighter.

Most of us want our house to be full of light! Light give us energy and makes us feel better. I have read a research where is stated that light can cure depression. So what can you do to “bring” light to your house?

  1. Don’t block the windows. Place your furniture or plants about 0.50 to 1 meter away from the windows. Most of the time, light reflects on the furniture and goes back outside, leaving your house dark. Plants, on the other side, absorb light (photosynthesis).
  2. Don’t block the light’s “road”. Draw an imaginery line from your window to the center of your room. Check if you have any large objects in its way. Large objects will prevent the light from “filling” your room. Try to place them near a wall and leave the center of the room empty.
  3. Place mirrors. Mirrors reflect the light and if you place them right you can bring light even to the darkest places of your home. A large mirror on a wall facing a window would be a great way to spread the light in the room. If you hate seeing yourself in a mirror you can make them face the floor or place a plant in front of them (they will still reflect the light).
  4. Use bright colours. Paint your walls with a bright colour like yellow or white. This will make your room even more brighter. Dark colours like black and pink will absorb the light and will make your room dark.
  5. Use artificial lighting. If the room you want to make brighter has no windows, you can buy lamps that produce natural light. They are a bit expensive but the result is quite amazing! You can paint a window to make it feel more natural. People would think that there is a window where there is none!

Those tips are useful for people living in countries where sunlight is rare or for people who live in basements and houses that direct sunlight is not possible.

  1. These are great tips. I’ve always used the mirror trick. Not only does it add light to a room, it also makes it appear larger.

  2. Good ideas. I try not to put things in front of the windows that cast shadows, it makes a huge difference.
