Underwater lighting dresses your pool with prestige while creating the ideal environment for late night swimming. Pool lights normally do not need special care and maintenance as their burn time may last up to 1000 hours. Nevertheless, you will eventually need to replace them. Changing an underwater swimming pool light is a fairly easy deal without needing to actually drain the pool itself or paying a professional do the job for you.
In particular:
1. Electricity and water can be a lethal combination so the necessary precautions need to be taken. Turn off the main circuit breaker or any other switches supplying electricity to your pool.
2. After shutting off the breaker, it is safe to remove the top steel screw of the light fixture. Hold it firm and steadily pull it out of its socket. Thankfully, most underwater lights have a long waterproof cord to eliminate the need of lowering the water level or even draining the pool out. If there is a tab at the bottom, swing it gently forcing it to open. Once you have removed the fixture, take it out from the pool.
3. To replace the dead bulb, you first have to open the fixture. Take the appropriate screw driver and remove all screws, bolts and nuts. You may need to apply extra force to unscrew old bolts as moisture and pool chemicals may have oxidized them over time. Now, smoothly lift the glass lens cover and place it into a safe and steady place. If possible, use a towel or a clean soft cloth to avoid scratching or breaking the glass lens cover.
4. Carefully unscrew the dead bulb out of its socket. Do not apply too much power as old bulbs may easily break due to basis corrosion. To avoid injuries, it is highly suggested to unscrew an old bulb using a stove glove or a towel folded in two. After the bulb is removed, take a clean dry cloth and clean the inside of the fixture removing stains, dirt, water and chemical residues. After the light fixture is cleaned and dried up, screw a new bulb. You can choose a different color for the new bulb if you wish. Just make sure you use a waterproof pool bulb! Moreover, to avoid starting from scratch, turn the power back on avoiding touching any parts of the light fixture to make sure the new bulb works perfectly.
5. Shut off the breaker and start reassembling the fixture. Use a new lens gasket to successfully protect your new bulb from moisture and grim. Ask your local pool store if you are not sure of the proper lens gasket type and diameter. Place it carefully and securely tight all screws.
6. Now, time to put back the light fixture inside the wall pool socket. Just make sure there are no air bubbles coming out of the fixture as you submerge it in the water. If you are experiencing problems trying to secure it inside the wall, then use a knife or screw driver to gently push it into. Screw back the last bolt of the fixture and you are done!
Do not hesitate to change an underwater light by yourself. Just make sure you turn off all circuit breakers supplying power to the pool. Once you do that, it is totally safe to start changing the dead bulb! Avoid spending money on expensive repair costs and enjoy your summer nights under the atmospheric pool lighting.
