Plant your flowers for window box in a well drained premium potting mix that contains water crystals to help stop the drying out of the soil.  Hot winds in summer can dry a flower arrangement out quickly, and will need constant watering every day.  Sometimes in the middle of the summer twice a day, morning and evening.

Wooden flower boxes are a natural choice for beauty and versatility, they are unique and can supply a rustic charm, but they will need to be taken care of.  Maintenance includes re-lacquering with a veneer once a year to stop it weathering.  This also keeps the timber water proof.

Plastic flower boxes are a great lightweight cheap material and can contain adequate moisture for window boxes, but coloured plastic containers fade very quickly in sunlight, so you may want to consider placing the plastic container into a timber cedar framed window box, to give it more appeal.

You can also find metal flower boxes, aluminium, terracotta or you may just get creative and make up your personal box from a variety of materials.  This can look fabulous and very captivating and you must consider the depth of the container and also the width, width is up to your desired measurements, but it is really not recommended to go less than 20cm deep (8inches).

Flowers for Window Boxes Tips

  • Aspect – at least half a day’s sun.
  • Climate – Mediterranean, temperate and subtropical.
  • Window box size – made to fit any ledge.
  • Plants spring to summer – two or three compact Ivy leaf geraniums, 6 lobelia, 2 grey leafed helichrysum, 1 golden leafed helichrysum, 3 variegated periwinkles can make a great palnting in a large widow box.  Small boxes just bring it down to half the size.
  • For a winter – display try new plants of golden leafed helichrysum with white primulas or yellow polyanthus;  grey helichrysum with pink mixed primulas, or a row of gleaming kalanchoes.
