Eight Environmentally-friendly Uses for Coffee Grounds

Do you love that first cup of coffee in the morning? Millions of people drink coffee everyday and that means a lot of left over coffee grounds.

Be a little thrifty and get some use out of those coffee grounds with these eight possibilities:

1. Cat and pest repellent

   Mix the coffee grounds with some orange peels and scatter around the outer edges of your flower beds. Cats who have a very sensitive sense of smell steer clear of the odors of oranges and coffee.

2. Clean your kitchen drain

   Pour 1/2 cup of used coffee grounds down the drain followed by a med. sized pot of boiling water. Be sure to use plenty of hot water so as to not clog your drains.

3. Deodorize your refrigerator

   Set a bowl of used coffee grounds in your freezer or refrigerator overnight and all the bad odors will be gone in the morning.

   Just sprinkle the grounds around entry ways where the ants are coming inside. Or you can even sprinkle them on an ant hill to get rid of the pests.

5. Plant fertilizer

   Sprinkle on your lawn or around plants as a natural fertilizer.

6. Use as a scrub

   Just mix some used coffee grounds with a little olive oil and you now have a wonderful skin scrub. This is also said to be good for removing cellulite.

7. Deodorize your hands

   Just rub your hands with used coffee grounds to remove bad odors such as from onions or fish.

8. Use on your hair

   Coffee grounds work great to freshen (dark hair) and hide gray hair between touch-ups. Just steep 1/4 cup of coffee grounds in three cups of hot water until the water cools, then pour over clean hair and let set for 3 minutes and rinse with warm water.
