Diy – Go Green in The Kitchen

The kitchen is an easy place to start your green revolution. You will even save money.

One of the easiest places to start your own personal green revolution is in the kitchen. You can do it yourself and it will actually save your money in the long run – maybe even the short run, too. As a bonus you will find you’re eating healthier. So follow these easy steps and get started.

1. Reduce your waste production.

One great way to reduce your waste production is to reduce the amount of pre-packaged food you buy. Most foods are packaged for the convenience of the purchaser.

Do we really need to buy vegetables packaged in one portion packages.  Lunch and snack foods are portioned and individually wrapped.  As well as the single serving sizes you can also get other sizes – in almost everything!  This is all very convenient and makes packing a lunch easy but look at all that extra packaging.

2. Buy in bulk.

Consider buying bulk instead.  Most dried foods like pasta, rice, spices, beans, etc. will keep for a long time.  If you have the space it certainly makes more sense to buy bulk – its cheaper too!  You can buy larger packages of meat and divide it yourself then wrap and freeze whatever portion sizes you want.

3. Stock the pantry.

Keep your pantry (or cupboard) well stocked with different herbs and spices (not just blends) and you can easily make your own teas, vegetable dips and sauces as well as many other things that will have your family saying : ‘Wow! You made that? – From scratch?’  It’s really not that hard either – but don’t tell them that!  Here is a link to an eBook with recipes for making great green teas!

4. Buy a recipe book.

Buy yourself some good recipe books and get to it.  Cooking from scratch is not very hard.  Be confident and look at cooking as something creative.  Get your family involved and make meal time an event.  Young kids especially enjoy helping in the kitchen. If you need some help here is a easy to follow recipe ebook to guide you.

When you get away from the pre-packaged foods then you will find you are eating more natural and healthy foods.  You will  eventually find yourself graduating towards foods that have less processing, additives and packaging which is good for everyone involved.

Choosing environmentally friendly, healthy foods now will leave an impression on your children and they will adopt your healthy, environmentally friendly food habits.

  2. Good advise and I agree. Never buy small packages of frozen foods. Buy the largest and use as needed. The same goes for most dry foods that do not spoil quickly. I don’t have a large storage place but even a small one can store quiet a lot.
