If your home has an interesting wildlife in your backyard then you might try deer feeders. Of course you should only use the deer feeders if you are sure that deer wildlife exists in your woodland areas. Most people would wonder on how this device works since deer are very shy creatures. They scurry away at the first sign of another animal or in most cases fear a person that would want to watch them. This is understandably so because some even hunt them down as prey.

Deer feeders can be used just for watching the deer or when you want the deer to be strong and healthy when the hunting season comes. In fact, they are often used for hunting and there are legal issues concerning the use of these deer feeders.

In Virginia, it is legal to supplement the growth of the deer all throughout the year; but it is illegal in that state to hunt with the aid of the deer feeders. It means that using the latter as bait is prohibited. The base line is if you’re new to the area, it would be best to find out the state laws regarding the use of these deer enticers.

How does it work?

Most deer feeders have a tank like structure to store the feeds. Of course, if you are to use it to supplement the growth of the deer then it is best to schedule the time of feeding. There are some automatic dispensers available that can be connected to the feed tank. The most effective ones are the electronic dispensers. They are either powered by batteries or by solar cells. These are the devices that regulate when and how much to dispense as the deer feed.

Are there different types of deer feeders?

They can come in all shapes and sizes each with a unique purpose why they look that way. Hanging deer feeders are best used on areas that are heavily wooded or uneven in terrain. They are best placed in a hanging position as there are a lot of trees to hang them to. Besides, you will also have to consider the area’s terrain.

Tripod deer feeders are for terrain that has a wide and flat surface. The tripods can withstand the weather and prevent the unintended creatures like raccoons to feed on them. This is the advantage of the tripod type against the hanging type of deer feeders.

The hanging types can easily be reached and tampered with by other animals. Whereas the tripod mounted feeders are fitted with pest deterrents to prevent any other animal from climbing onto the feed dispenser. If you are planning to place deer feeders on a place where there is a dense population of deer, you might as well place two or more on separate places. This will prevent over population of deer wildlife in said area.

If you are just a regular nature lover who disapproves hunting, then placing it about 20 meters from your home will attract deer wildlife in your backyard. They feel more comfortable this way, since you are not close enough when they are feeding.

Just make sure you follow the laws in your state and be responsible in preventing any hunters taking advantage of your deer feeder. otherwise, you will be held equally liable for any violation in your capacity as the owner of the deer feeders.
