A List of Strange and Useful Things That are Made Into Fabric

Strange things that are made into fabric.

1. plastic bags.

  • plastic bags can be melted together to form a sturdy flexible material than can be used to make clothing articals. like this dress or the plastic bags can be interlinked and made into a form of yarn called plarn, and turned into articles of clothing like this dress and accessories like bags. this is very good to help us get rid of the 500 billion plastic bags that pollute our land each year.

2. human and animal hair.

  • human and animal hair to make fabric have been around since ancient times. but only recently has it become more of a “vice” to make any form of fabric out of human hair besides wigs. but it has gone into the fashion industry, like this model sporting a dress made of human hair. animal hair can also be made into sweaters and scarves and bags. like this woman who owns a sweater made out of fur her cat shed. scientist have also found a way of turning chicken feathers into fabric. making clothing out of fur and hair is a good thing, as it can reduce our need for polyester and acrylic and more on natural material, and it can help us better use the millions of pounds of hair thrown away each year.

3. wine

  • yes, you heard me correctly, wine. scientist have found out a substance created when oxygen combines with the fermentation process that turns into a goo, this goo has fiber in it, which has been turned into the free this scary looking model is wearing. this is a interesting take on something most people would have just tossed out. but it does not last long, when the cellulose dries up the fabric dies.

4. cassette tapes and VHS tapes.

  • ever had a tape that you had no use for, or it was broken, so you just tossed it out? well, now you live in guilt for what you are about to see. that tape can be turned into fabric, which can be knitted, woven, etc into very fashionable items. like this dress for instance. this is good to get rid of the thousands of miles of VHS and cassette tape that just get tossed in the trash.

5. newspaper

  • this material can be knitted, crocheted or woven into several materials such as rugs or this seat. the yarn can be very brittle and very flammable, but the shear ability to make a yarn out of newspaper astounds me. weaving this yarn is more stable, as it is more tightly bound and less likely to be ripped like a seat would.
