12 Extraordinary Uses for Vodka

Extraordinary uses for vodka that don’t include getting inebriated.

Vodka is a spirit which is good with Coke, lemonade, cranberry and lime. I could think of a dozen ways to use it as a drink but it does have other household uses if you can refrain from drinking it long enough to try them out.

  1. First aid dressings keep wounds clean but when you come to take them of the gum on them pulls the skin and hairs. This really hurts. Soak the dressing in vodka, especially around the edges and it will come away easily with hurting.
  2. If you have mould around baths and showers vodka will kill the spores. Put some in a trigger spray bottle, spray and leave for a few minutes and then wash off.
  3. A little vodka applied to the face with a piece of cotton wool cleanses and acts like an astringent. Great for treating spots and blemishes as the alcohol makes it a disinfectant and anti bacterial.
  4. A little vodka in a plastic spray bottle will act as an insecticide. Kills flies and wasps.
  5. If you have a cold sore a little vodka applied with a cotton bud will dry it out and keep it clean.
  6. Adding a splash of vodka to your regular shampoo bottle cleanses the hair, prevents scalp infections and encourages healthy hair growth.
  7. To cure foot odour wipe the feet with cotton wool and vodka.
  8. If you have large leafed indoor plants and they are prone to aphid attacks wash the leaves with cool water and then wipe with vodka on a piece on cotton wool. (Don’t use on sensitive plants like African Violet.)
  9. Vodka will clean and shine chrome, glass and bathroom fittings.
  10. Many kinds of stains on fabric, or hard surfaces can be removed by rubbing with vodka. Don’t soak the area and apply sparing to a cloth rather than pouring it onto the stain. Removes lipstick marks!
  11. Jewellery and cutlery will shine if you soak it in vodka.
  12. Stickers and labels often leave a residue when you remove them. A little vodka on a cloth will cure the problem.

  1. Funny article – though I think I will stick to just drinking it (hic!).

  2. me too… cheers!

  3. I will have to try #2. One shot for me, one for the bathtub.

  4. with number 11.. i would be cautious to put in opals, pearls, emeralds, morganite, and aquamarine into vodka.. it might ruin the stone ;)

    Great article!

  5. I@ think I agree with you Alexa perhaps I should have added that precious and semi precious stones shouldn’t be soaked in vodka. If it doesn’t damage the stones it might disolve the cement in the fixings.

  6. I have heard that it is also good as a root starter, mixed with a little peroxide. I don’t know the exact formula though. Good tips.

  7. I sure learned something! I may have stop drinking it!

  8. What will we have left to drink if we go around wasting it around the house:-)

    Helpful hints!

  9. Amazing, I didn’t know it had so many uses. Mixed with tomato juice, worcestershire sauce and just a touch of pepper sauce, add ice and stir with a stick of radish, it makes a very soothing gargle (hic!)

  10. Dee, I like your suggestion…it really should have been included in the list!

    Anne…I never thought of that!!

Could I make a suggestion? Buy two bottles at a time then you won’t run out! Why do they never do BOGOF (buy one get one free) on vodka?

  11. I will have to go buy some vodka! Who knew that it was good for more than first aid and first ale. :)

  12. Great tips. Thanks. When my son was a child, he would have swimmer’s ear every summer. His Dr suggested I use an eye dropper and put vodka in his ears after swimming. It worked!

  13. i don see y you don just use metholated spirits it will do the same job and is cheeper, its the sameas vodka just with out the flavoring and added sugar. :)

  14. I don’t fancy smelling of meths! It’s highly imflammable too especially used in larger amounts.

  15. Thanks for the tips – but I will be drinking the vodka and not cleaning with the vodka!

  16. Add a half cup of vodka and a half cup of water to a good freezer bag and freeze. The result is a soft slushy re-freezable ice pack thats good for first aid applications, swollen eyes, etc.

  17. Great idea, Bob! One to remember.

  18. Some great suggestions, but I really have to caution against cleansing your face with vodka. Alcohol is terribly drying for the skin and products containing it aren’t recommended – let alone straight alcohol! Drying out the skin is not good even for oily skin, as the skin makes more oil to compensate.A dab on a q-tip might be good in an emergency to dry up a pimple, but not as a first choice. Tea tree oil, toothpaste, hydrogen peroxide are examples of fast pimple-zapping treatments that are friendlier to the skin.

Some other uses: I dampen a cotton ball with vodka and run it over my computer keys to disinfect them. Also you can make air fresheners or even perfumes with a little vodka in water, and then essential oils of your choice. I make jewellery that involves gluing plastic and glass components to base metals, and I use vodka to clean the metal first (often with some orange oil added as a degreaser).

I’m sure I use it for more things but that’s all I can think of right now! People think I’m nuts to have a bottle of vodka for cleaning, like it’s really exorbitant or something – but it is a cheap replacement for several proprietary products.

  19. P.S. Same goes for alcohol in shampoo, it will dry out your hair and therefore is a bad idea. I recommend rinsing your hair with vinegar to remove build-up. It leaves your hair amazingly soft, too. I do it after shampooing, but before conditioning – some find they can skip conditioner altogether as it leaves hair so soft. I tried that but my hair is too dry to go without, but I do find I can use less conditioner.
