Planning Comes First

Once you know what area(s) you want to decorate, the next step is to develop a plan. It simply does not matter if you have a castle to decorate or a small studio apartment, planning comes first and is a crucial first step in having the project turn out right.

Planning is especially important if you are on a budge. To plan means to write your plan down. Right now you should be considering the method for writing your plan down. Do you want to store it in your computer? A notebook with pockets and divider tabs is also workable. Keeping it in a file folder in a designated drawer of your file cabinet is also good. I know a few students, who preferred to keep everything in a portable file box.

There is no one best method. The best method is the one you are most comfortable with, and can use with ease.

Why Should You Plan?

Do you want to be successful with your decorating project? Studies have shown that planning is directly related to success. In decorating this holds true as it will keep you focused on your budgets. (Incidentally, professional decorators/designers do a lot of planning to assure the project will turn out according to the desires of their clients).

Budget Planning

Before diving into decorating your room or home there are three areas you must budget:

  • Finances
  • Time
  • Energies

Knowing how much you plan to spend on your project will keep it on track and within the dollar amount you set. You need to be comfortable with this amount for this project. Do yourself a big favor and plan this carefully, to avoid a lot of needless stress caused by the project exceeding what you projected for it.

Have you a set date when you want the project to be completed? Writing it down will help you schedule in-home sales people, technicians, deliveries, installers and any other appointments needed to get the job completed. You will also be able to set time slots to utilize the time you have available to shop, do some of the decorating yourself, contact specialists, run errands, or take a special class to help you with some aspect of your project’s decoration.
