One way to make someone feel comfortable in his room is to paint it in his favorite colour. Different personalities have certain documented preferences with regard to the colour of their walls. In this article, affinity to certain wall colors by certain personality types is explored. Everything is as observed and it is definitely not analyzed or explained. The point is how painting the room in a colour can please the occupant, based on observed preference for colors.
Starting with the obvious, kids will be looked at. The colors preferred by girls between pre-primary school age and late teen age are explored. They like pastel colors in general; and pink is their most popular colour of choice. They prefer pink clothes, pink dolls and pink decorations. The question is: Will it be a good idea to paint this typical girl’s room pink? It depends on several factors. A quiet and shy girl may be better off with normal white walls, which are then adorned by her with pink decorations, etc. An expressive, confident girl may be very keen to paint everything in her room pink. In this case, it is advisable to indulge her. The point of the exercise is to please by painting the room in the correct colour as preferred.
Age also plays a part in deciding whether someone would be happier with a room painted in their favorite colors. Young children are known to like bright and bold colors and to use them liberally. A young boy, given the choice, may just go for flaming red. An older boy or a young man may balk at the colour. Similarly, young girls may wear pink, have pink dolls and teddy-bears; and still want the walls of their rooms painted pink. In that case, painting their walls pink is the right thing to do, because it keeps them happy. Older people are generally prone to embarrassment, so they may not express their preferences so readily.
The majority of the people prefer white or cream as the colour for their rooms. The colors are safe and seem like they are not as invasive to people as some colors. The fact is, many people neither love nor hate these colors. The same cannot be said about other colors, for example, yellow or purple. A person who hates a colour usually finds himself distracted by the colour. The best thing to do under the circumstance is to change the colour to something neutral like white. White allows any wall decoration or picture to fit in. When one leaves the room, one can then take the decorations away.
However, budget allowing for painting, the best practice is to paint people’s spaces in their preferred colour, since it leads to a positive atmosphere. It gives them a sense of ownership and belonging. At home it leads to a happier family; and at work it may even lead to increased productivity: A happier employee is a more productive employee, it is said.
