Storage space seems to be an issue in every home, there never seems to be enough and we all tend to place items where they don’t belong. With some thought and careful planning, it is possible to increase and create new storage space where there was once nothing but a disorganized mess. The key to creating more storage space in your home is organization and a desire to change the manner in which you live for the better. There is no need for a professional interior designer to inform you of what you already know – organize, sort, and utilize every square inch of your home to it’s maximum storage potential. While it is a hassle and a good deal of work, keep your eyes on the prize – more space in which to live and entertain without the need to move to a larger home.

An excellent place to begin in creating more storage space is to clean and assess the importance of the items within your home. We all have amassed a good deal of “junk” over the years, and there comes a time to jettison unwanted or unneeded items. Take a good hard look at what you and your family have accumulated, keep what is important or may have sentimental or financial value, and donate the rest to a charity that resells household goods. This not only helps those less fortunate than yourself, but it will most likely provide you with a tax deduction come April 15, everyone wins. In the process you may have already created a few hundred square feet of storage space within your home and garage.

Closets are a great way to create more storage space if you can remember a simple rule – closets are for clothing attire and nothing else. Get rid of anything that is not clothing related, and add a few shelves and a shoe tree. The shelves are a good way to store clothing items that can be folded without wrinkling, and a shoe tree is amazingly helpful and keeps the floor uncluttered. By utilizing closet space properly, a bedroom can most likely get by with only one dresser, and in the process you have just created more living space in the room.

Finally, look to your garage as an outstanding way to increase storage space if used wisely. Again, shelving is a must – consider how much space you can save in your home with an entire wall of floor to ceiling shelves in the garage. Any items that are used only occasionally or seasonally can be boxed and shelved. When the items are needed, it only takes a few minutes to obtain them and then return them to their rightful place when finished.
