Graphics for Making Small Draw Knives

Draw knives are used to remove bark from logs. This is the first step to carving large items or making lumber. This will also allow you to make flat-sided logs for rustic home construction.

Figure A
Heat your 01 tool steel bar to bright orange. Draw out 3 to 3.5-inch tangs by hammering to shape in Figure A.

Figure B
Reheat to bright orange. Bend your draw knife tangs to a 90-degree angle as in Figure B, or to whatever angle will provide you with the best grip. Wider-angled tangs will prevent scraping your hands on the log as you work.

Figure C
Heat to bright orange and hammer your desired blade angle as in Figure C. The most common is a 30-degree included angle, where the blade is 15 degrees on each side.

Figure D
Add your blade handles as in Figure D. Drill handle and apply a liberal amount of gray metal epoxy to the tangs and inside the handles. Allow to cure overnight before use.
