Frosted Glass Designing

Instructions on how to create beautiful frosted designs on glassware without etching and acids.

This is an easy-to-do craft that yields beautiful results. It’s addicting — once you try it, you’ll be decorating large glassware objects, mirrors, windows, etc.

What You Will Need

  • Glass ware item:  I suggest practicing with glass which isn’t too fragile and inexpensive, like a shot glass.
  • Frosted glass spray:  Available at craft and hobby stores.
  • Masking tape
  • Stencils
  • Newspaper

Instructions

In a well ventilated room, lay out newspaper over the area you will be doing your craft, and at least 3 feet around to protect the surface you are working on. You should also wear a facial mask to be sure you are not inhaling any vapors.

Apply the stencil to the shot glass and hold down securely with masking tape. Now tape the remaining outside of the glass, so that the only part not taped is the opening of the stencil.

Lay the shot glass upside down on the newspaper so that no spray will get inside the glass.

Different frosted glass spray brands have different instructions. Following the instructions on your spray can, spray over the stencil.

Wait until this is totally dry. Tip: Immediately after you’ve sprayed over your stencil, spray a tiny amount on another glass item. Check this other glass item for dryness. This way you will know for sure your glass is dry.

Carefully remove the masking tape from the stencil and the rest of the glass. That’s it!

You will be coming up with so many ideas on your own — colored glass, Christmas bulbs, punch bowls, etc.

Another way to do this without stenciling is to cover the entire surface with masking tape. Using a utility knife, cut your own design into the tape, remove that inside area and spray. Now you have a design that is uniquely yours!
