Four Reasons to Use Neutral Color Schemes

Neutral color schemes are an organic and natural way to decorate your home.
If you’re afraid of bright, bold colors steer your color scheme to a more natural palette. Neutral colors range from white to black and are often found, you guessed it, outdoors. More and more interior decorators are including greens, blues, and yellows in the neutral color classification. These greens, blues, and yellows are often watered down to create a calm, soothing feeling.
- Neutral color schemes connect you with nature. Encouraging neutral paint colors brings the outdoors in and is becoming more popular with the rising “Green” and “Zen” movement. Neutral color schemes are not just limited to paint colors though. Consider the types of materials you are using to decorate your home. Bamboo, slate and steel are all natural, organic products that add diversity and uniqueness.
- Neutral paint colors do not go out of style. Olive green refrigerators and stunningly bright orange counter tops have faded with time. Yet, white-washed walls and tan carpets seem to be accepted throughout time. Although timeless, white-washed walls can be bland and harsh on the eyes; opt for a warmer brown based color that will reflect warmth and comfort. It is important to use neutral colors in details of tile, carpet, and appliances. Appliances are expensive to replace as with tile and carpet, not to mention a hassle of a mess.
- Choosing neutral interior color schemes makes the resale of a home much easier. Bright, bold colors do not appeal to everyone and may discourage a potential home buyer if they know they will have to break out the paint buckets. Cream, beige, and tan colors appeal to nearly everyone and give the potential home buyer that “move-in feel.”
- Neutral color combinations allow for dramatic color in accessories. The joy of interior decorating is being able to showcase a few unique pieces of art. By using a neutral color scheme, the colorful vases, photos, and other various accessories will pop and draw the eye. Also, it is much easier to change out a few minor accessories than pieces of furniture with changing trends.
