Fabric to Brighten Your Home

Fabric does not have to match. It can be floral, stripped, plain or anything you like as long as it is of one hue. You can use any left-over fabric to cover chairs or as many things as you have fabric to cover. Have fun and enjoy decorating your home.

Wake up your dining room with boldly mismatched seat covers. Fabrics do not have to match so if you have pieces of leftover fabrics that share a common hue they will work well together. Checks, stripes, floral, polka dots can all work in harmony. Before using the fabric in your room, lie it all out together, if one looks out of sync, eliminate it. And do keep your furniture in mind, colors with bold punch perk up dark furniture.

If you decide to cover your dining room chairs, as said before, you can use the different colors as long as they have the same hue and look well together. Small dining room chairs take about 1/2 yard to cover the seat of the chair. Some fabric requires more yardage if a design has to be centered on the cushion.

You can also cover cushions in your living room using the same idea or if you have enough fabric, you can make slip covers and curtains. You never need waste fabric. You can make a wall hanging, frame a beautiful piece to hang on your wall, make a couch throw or even piece a quilt. It is also rewarding to make a dress or any piece of clothing, you are sure to have one of a kind.

If you have not sewn before and therefore have no fabric, you can buy remnants at a fabric store or jump in whole hog and buy by the yard. Sewing is a hobby you will never outgrow. Youngsters and oldsters alike find joy in sewing.

For a contemporary look all shades of blues, from lights to darks go together-or creams and chocolate browns.

Collections look better in odd numbers, three pieces of pottery, and five vases and so on.

Don’t be afraid to introduce an antique into a modern room. Choose an antique cabinet that matches the dark wood in the rest of the room.

Look for similarities that tie pieces together, curved lines, backs of similar heights, exposed legs, or skirts. Just make sure they share the same finish. A dark walnut and pale pine wont blend together.

Have fun decorating your home and find your personal style. Nothing is wrong if it delights your eye and gives you joy. It doesn’t cost much to do just that. You can always repaint if a color doesn’t look the way you thought it would. You can buy fabric remnants at a fabric store or you can get great deals at thrift stores on fabric or furniture that you might want to refinish. You can have a beautiful-one -of -a-kind-home-on-a-dime. Well, maybe a quarter.

  10. Ruby, My wife makes quilts, couch covers and everything you can imagine. I must say she is pretty good at decorating and I have never seen her throw an inch of fabric out. She even hangs quilts on the wall.
