Decorating Your Bedroom

Tips for styles and colors that you can use to decorate your bedroom.

On average, people are in their bedroom at least eight hours per day. Between getting dressed, sleeping, sex, putting away laundry, and watching television, the bedroom sees a lot of activity. It makes sense to make your bedroom a place that you will enjoy. The bedroom should have a pleasing color scheme, comfortable furniture, and a cozy nook where you can get away from the stresses of life.

How you decorate your bedroom depends a lot on the size and shape of that room. Obviously, your bed is going to be the main feature. You also need to fit in a dresser in many cases, bedside tables with decent lighting, and if you have room a comfortable reading chair, computer desk, and television stand are also common bedroom furnishings.

Think about what your bedroom is used for. If you want a quiet nook for escape, arrange your bedroom with a sitting area where you can sit and meditate after a busy day. You can put in a stereo system for mood enhancing music or sounds. If you want to burn off stress with some computer time, create a computer zone that is screened off from the rest of your room. If you want to create a romantic feel, purchase netting to hang from your ceiling to create a romantic Arabian feel. Use colors to match the mood you want to create.

When considering your bedroom colors, think about the meanings that the different colors impart:

  • Beige-Beige has become one of the leading choices for paint color. Beige gives a sense of being genuine and honest. It is perfect when matched with darker accent colors.
  • Black-Black displays power and strength, in religion black implies humbleness, explaining why priests often wear black. It is, however, a lousy color for walls because it is hard to paint over it when you grow tired of the color. If you want black in your room, make it an accent color, not the main color.
  • Blue-If you want to being a sense of tranquility to your bedroom, blue is an excellent choice. Researchers are convinced that shades of blue enhance the production of mood altering brain chemicals (serotonin). If you want a stress free environment, choose blue for your bedroom!
  • Brown-Dark chocolate browns can bring a sense of longing or loss to a room. For this reason, many prefer to use dark brown as an accent color only. Men tend to be far more drawn to brown than women.
  • Gray-Like blue, gray is a calming color. It can, however, create a feeling or sense of depression when used too much within one room.
  • Green-Creating a green bedroom brings you closer to nature. Green is reminiscent of trees, grass, and other outdoor environments. Like blue, green can bring a sense of calm, which is why it is a popular hospital color.
  • Orange-One of the more bold colors, orange is best as an accent color. Orange is a vibrant color with connotations of energy and spirit.
  • Pink-The softer pink shades are considered to be highly romantic and mood enhancing. Men hate pink in their bedrooms, usually, so make sure the man in your life doesn’t mind pink. Odds are high that he will not want anything to do with pink, which is generally associated with younger girl’s bedrooms.
  • Purple-Tones of purple give a sense of royalty and wealth. Purple wall colors are geared more towards girls and women because it is considered to be a romantic, flowery color. Pale lavenders and lilacs are best for bedrooms.
  • Red-Red is a vibrant color that brings energy to its surroundings. When redecorating your bedroom, use red as an accent color. Walls covered in red can become too intense and overpowering.
  • White-As the color of virginity, pureness, and innocence, white is a bright, neutral. You can easily make white your base color and then use brighter tones as your accent colors. One thing to think about is that white walls will show dirt far more easily than other colors.
