10 Ways to Give Your House a Designer Look

Transform your house to a designer home using these tips, some of which that show you how to magic your room to style under a tight budget.
Lighting
Lighting is always important for a bold dramatic feel. Small lights with different colours can be used in any niches in the walls and focusing it onto an object gives a strong well decorated sense. Small circular lights on the side of the staircase or under kitchen cabinets immediately look very posh. There are many cheap detachable circular lights that can be found in any local supermarkets or stores. Beautiful and unique chandeliers can easily be made or found and always play an important part in light distribution.

Colour
For a real designer feel, go for bold colours like lime green or a sharp pink. Associate certain colours with certain rooms, like sea green for the living room, lime green for the kitchen, blue for the bathroom, browns and reds for the bedroom etc. A good way to add a dramatic feel is to pick one good piece of curtain. The curtain can have lovely floral patterns or about 2-3 colours and use those tiny colours to incorporate them into various parts of that room, like furniture, or wall paper on a feature wall. Bold and dramatic colours and their shades transform your rooms to beauty.

Textures
Different materials like mirrors, glass, fur etc. add dimension to any drama in the room. Materials such as fur, jute, cotton add a homely feel to the house whereas materials like faux leather or leather, glass and mirrors give it a designer feel. A fusion of different textures used in the right way can really add a dimension to your room. Rugs are a good way of doing this, as are cushions and curtains so get creative there. Mirrors are great because adding a mirror in the right place can make the room look bigger than what it is.

Patterns
Like I said above, choose a curtain filled with different patterns and use some of the colours and patterns out of it and incorporate it into little parts of the room. Patterns can be anything from floral to abstract and by using them in the right way. If you are scared of using patterns in your house, because they can get a bit dominant, try using patterns through wall paper on a feature wall and then use the similar pattern on cushions or any other small things like a canvas painting of the same pattern.

Car Boot Sales
Boot sales or garage sales and flea markets are brilliant places where you can pick up nifty objects that just liven up a room. Things like paintings or slightly olden looking objects will be available if you look carefully. They might be second hand but are good ways of making your room look lovely under a tight budget. Also, these items will have a history behind them! Be careful though, boot sales sometimes turn out to be really cheap and the last thing you want to do is buy a load of clutter for your house. Every purchase you make must be thought out through clearly.

Internet
This is a cheap way to get anything from paint and wall paper to the latest designer furniture. The amount of stuff you can find is great because here, you can find the cheapest and you are exposed to a worldwide scale of stuff that you can buy. If you like the idea of having cultural themes for certain rooms, then the internet is a good way you can get certain things indigenous to a country easily, saving you the time of going to that country and getting it yourself. Beware of scamming on the internet though and make expensive purchases wisely when you are web shopping.

Handiwork
A brilliant way to add your personality to the house and give it a creative edge is to put up your own creative work. If you have a talent like painting or photography, put these images on to canvas and put them up in your rooms. Also, if you look around the suburbs of where you live, there will be many people who support cottage industries or things like pottery, stained glass making or basket weaving etc. A few lessons from them will give you an experience and you can make your own little bits and bobs that make your house feel homely and edgy. This is inexpensive because even if you aren’t an artist or anything, you can still paint a few abstract lines to make your room beautiful.

Expensive Purchases
There are certain times when you’ve just got to make an expensive purchase but don’t feel pressured into doing something like this. Even one slightly expensive chair or single sofa in the living room will look gorgeous and transform the room to beauty. You can make your house look beautiful cheaply but if you really want to put that unmistakeable designer stamp on it, choose one or more items to change the outlook. Also remember, the right colours quickly give a designer feel.

White Walls Are Okay
White walls are perfectly acceptable but having a house full of white walls is boring. What you can do is choose to have all the walls white and inject colour into the room through the wise use of colour, patterns, texture and lighting. Using outrageous colours for chairs and sofas is the best way to give a white room a slap of colour. Another good way of adding colour to a room with white walls is a feature wall with bright wall paper and use the same wallpaper to mount it on to square canvases and put it up on the white walls. As long as your room is packed with loads of colours, the white walls won’t be bad. You can also add things like cloth wall hangings that are very intricate too to add a whammy of colour.

Less Is More
It’s okay if you don’t have much in your room. The more clutter you add, the more mismatched it becomes so to keep your rooms looking a la mode, the only way to really do that is keep the amount of objects in your rooms to a minimum. Only add those objects to the room that have some sort of flow with the theme of the room or the tone of the room. Add those objects that contribute to a designer feel. Some rooms do have a lot of objects and that means that there’s a lot of action in the room, so they cut out something else, like a strong wall paper or paint.

So these tips should be ready to set you off on your way to transform your room to something beautiful and designer. You can achieve a very posh look to your house under a tight budget but for that you will have to look in the right places and snag the right bargain. The part that is key is keeping your personality intact and whatever creativity you put into your house should be undeniably you.
