Work From Home: How to Create a Smart Work Area

Spend much time working from home? Having a separate area for work is vital to keeping everything organized so here’s how to create one.

  1. The L or U work area – By creating your work area in an L or U shape, it gives you better accessibility to all the important items on your desk. And it works best with an ergonomic swivel chair on rollers that let you turn 360 degrees, and also gives good back support.
  2. Phone jacks and power outlets - Set up your work area near them. No long cables required and unsightly wires can be neatly tucked away with wire looms or cable ties available at hardware stores.
  3. Notice board – No more Post Its around your PC’s monitor. Make your notice board using Styrofoam, cover with colorful fabric or gift wrappers and put it up on a wall that you’ll first see the moment you step into the area. Let this be the focal point for your work area so that you’ll first be reminded of the important stuff that needs to be done.
  4. Lighting – Effective lighting helps to reduce eye strain and lets you be more productive. If your work area is not adequately lit, get a task lamp and angle the light to fall on the keyboard or on your writing area.
