Productivity When Working From Home

Do you work from home? Do you want to boost your productivity when working from home? Here is how you can do it.

Many people seek the comfort, convenience as well as the freedom of working from home, be it as a freelancer, a small business owner, or some other home-based business.

There are many reasons why people choose to work from home. Working from home means that you work at your own pace, following your own timetable. There is no need to get all dressed up in the mornings, no need to deal with potential workplace conflicts or getting stuck in peak hour traffic.

However, working from home does have its disadvantages and challenges. It may be difficult for people to concentrate due to the numerous distractions that exist at home, and this may lead to a decline in productivity.

To gain better control over such undesirable distractions, here are some tips as to how you can make the experience of working from home a productive one.

  1. Plan Your Timetable

  2. Have a clear schedule to indicate your working hours. Make sure that you won’t be disturbed during this period. Inform anybody around of your working plans so they will be less likely to come disturb you.

Ironically, working from home creates a tendency for an individual to work longer hours than one might do at the workplace. Begin and end your work at a fixed time each day. This will allow you to establish a nice work routine and will prevent you from getting burnt out as a result of overworking. This will also help to make sure that your work time does not cut into your personal and family time.

  3. Control Your Distractions

  4. Working from home, away from any prying eyes makes it easy for one to lose focus on the job at hand. Many distractions exist at home such as household chores, the home phone or family members that do not exist in the workplace. In addition, other distractions such as downloading music or surfing the Internet may eat into your work. It will be difficult, but you will have to shut yourself away from such distractions in order to become truly productive.

  5. Maintain a Desirable Working Environment

  6. Productivity at work can be increased if your workplace is organised. Reduce the clutter at your desk by removing unnecessary ornaments and objects. Keep all important work-related documents neatly filed up and well classified.

Dedicate a specific drawer or compartment specifically for office supplies and keep it well stocked so you won’t have to waste valuable productive time searching for that staple or a marker.

Dress professionally even when you are working from home. This will help you to achieve a good mental state which is conducive for working.

Final Closing Thoughts

Remember to lead a balanced life while working from home. Break the routine by occasionally working from a local café with a laptop. Keep yourself physically fit with regular exercise. Once you establish a level of professionalism when working from home, productivity will surely follow.

  1. Wenbin Nah is right. I have worked at home off and on for years. Prior to that I was self-employed. It can be very difficult to discipline yourself to “keep your nose to the grindstone” or, on the other hand “know when to quit”. I tend to waver between both of these and struggle constantly to find a happy medium. It is well worth it when you do get yourself organized and start maintaining a regular work/play schedule. Without a healthy, balanced schedule, you can begin to resent the work you used to love and start feeling like a prisoner in your own home/office.
