If you have a passion for something or a hobby that you really enjoy, then it can be a potential source of extra income for you. Success comes when you love what you’re doing. It will feel like working and playing at the same time because you’re having fun! These are four easy and fun home-based ideas. Enjoy!
- Scrapbooking Business. If you love scrapbooking, you can offer to make scrapbooks or scrapbook pages for other people. There are a lot of people who would like to preserve their photos and memorabilias into a scrapbook, but they do not know how to do so, or do not have the time for it. This is a good opportunity to offer your scrapbooking skills. You could either charge only for your labor, or charge for your labor and materials. You could choose to do the traditional paper scrapbooking, or you could offer digital scrapbooking too if this is your forte. There is a lot of potential in scrapbooking, especially for families with kids. You could make a nice sample scrapbook that you could show to people so they will have an idea of your designs and color schemes. You could post ads in school newsletters, public bulletin boards, or on free online ads like Craigslist. You could also rent a table at a booth or show in community centers to showcase your samples, and give out your business cards at the same time. One great idea too is to market them as gifts. Like for example if a husband would like to surprise his wife with a unique and special gift, you could make a beautiful little scrapbook featuring photos of their joyful years together, with nice quotes and letters. You could make graduation gifts featuring the growing and learning years of a child. Or you could make wedding gifts, anniversary gifts, birthday gifts, and so much more. Let your creativity and imagination run wild and you’ll find many, many things you could possibly do with scrapbooking. If this is your passion, you’ll be earning and having fun at the same time!
- Photography Business. If you like taking pictures, you can possibly turn this hobby into a business. Nowadays digital cameras are becoming more advanced and more affordable than ever before. SLR Cameras that used to be thousands of dollars before can now be purchased for a few hundred dollars. The regular digital cameras can take really nice pictures, but with SLR’s you can do so much more nice effects even if you are not a professional photographer. And of course the best thing with digital cameras is that you can take as much pictures as you desire and choose the best from there. You can visit the photo finishing shops to get ideas for the backgrounds and poses. Visit the library, read books and search for online tutorials on photography to learn more and to improve your photography skills. You may want to ask your friends to help you get started. Or you may want to volunteer to take pictures in the beginning to let the people get to know you and for them to see the quality of your work. Then as your experience and portfolio grows you could ask for referrals. If you come up with really nice photos, your business will grow just by word of mouth. You may choose to specialize in taking children’s photos, family photos, baby photos, etc. You could decide if you want to just take the photos and let your customers print them, or if you prefer to do it all the way through and have the photos printed. Then you may also want to look into having your own website so people could see samples of your work. Nowadays it is very affordable to have a website. I recommend BlueHost, they’re really good. I’m not affiliated with them nor do I do advertising for them. But I’ve had websites hosted by them and I like their service. Also, if you have an internet provider, check with them if they provide you with a webspace. Most of the time internet providers provide a web space for their members. You can use this to start so you wouldn’t need to pay for extra anymore. So… if you like photography you may want to give this idea a try! You may find it a fun and rewarding experience!
- Become a Tutor. Teach others the knowledge you already have, like for example Math or English. Or you could earn money teaching others the hobbies you have become an expert on, such as scrapbooking, jewelry-making, sewing, soap-making, knitting, cake-decorating, dancing, etc. Maybe you’re good at fixing computers. Or maybe you’re proficient at computer softwares. You could consider one-on-one tutoring on these too, and charge lower than what it would normally cost if one was to take these courses at a night-school. Or you could teach a language that you’re fluent at. Everyone is good at something. Determine the talent, skill, or knowledge that you’re comfortable at sharing and teaching. You could put ads on newspapers or place the ads online. Or you could post ads at public message boards, like those that you find in grocery stores, community centers, etc. Make the ads really nice, attractive and colorful. Put your contact number in little strips that people can tear out and bring home. Perhaps in the beginning you could consider volunteering to show your expertise, and let word of mouth, referrals and ads make your business grow.
- Sell How-To Videos and Tutorials. Another way to earn money from your
knowledge, hobbies or expertise it to take how-to videos and publish them. There is a website called www.mindbites.comwhere you could publish your videos for free. For example you could feature cooking or craft lessons. The earning is 65% or more every time someone buys your video. You retain all rights to your content and there are no long-term obligations. Their website says it’s the easiest way to sell video tutorials on the web. I have not personally tried it yet but I think it’s a great way to share your knowledge with others and have the potential to earn at the same time. The PayPal system is also a great way to receive the payments. Everyone has a talent or skill that somebody else would also like to learn. So if you have a video camera you may want to try submitting a video and have fun along the way too!
