Upside Down Plants: A Summary

A summary on the innovative gardening method developed for growing plants.

Gardening is an outdoor hobby which requires a continuous attention of the person. Hence, in a way its an time intensive hobby to pursue. Recently, I came across articles “Upside Down Gardening: How to Grow Strawberries, Growing Tomato Upside-down – Revolution in Gardenering, Do It Yourself Upside Down Tomato Planters, How to Make a Upside Down Tomato Hanger and Tomatoes for Decoration as Well as Eating Pleasure” which discussed about growing plants in an innovative way. The innovative way is to grow plants upside down. It is a technique in which plants roots are up while the rest part is in the bottom. Now, the question is how is it possible to grow plant upside down. This has been already tried for many plants and for strawberry and tomato are given in articles “Upside Down Gardening: How to Grow Strawberries” and “Growing Tomato Upside-down – Revolution in Gardenering, Do It Yourself Upside Down Tomato Planters and Tomatoes for Decoration as Well as Eating Pleasure” respectively. The basic concept is that rather than giving an opening upwards to the pot for plant growth, it is given upside down.

The major problems encountered are holding the plant in the pot and preventing the leach out of the soil from the bottom. This is prevented by attaching an impermeable support to the upside down plant such that it prevents the fall of the plant as well as soil. The major advantages which have been cited by the articles “Growing Tomato Upside-down – Revolution in Gardenering and Tomatoes for Decoration as Well as Eating Pleasure” is that such cultivation will accelerate the growth rate of plant, increase the aesthetic value of the area and reduce the problem of pest.

The requirements and the steps involved in this process of cultivation are very nicely described in the articles “Upside Down Gardening: How to Grow Strawberries, Growing Tomato Upside-down – Revolution in Gardenering and How to Make a Upside Down Tomato Hanger“. In short, it can be said that a can or container is taken. From its open end, some ropes are tied which will used to hang than container. While at its bottom a hole is made through which the plantlet is passed. After passing the plantlet the hole is sealed with help of the plant support. Later soil is added. Once this has been done, water the plantlet regularly and it will grow into a beautiful plant.
