Plants planted on the north side of the house makes a great shelter from the cold winds from north. And in the summer the leaves of the trees and plants planted around the house create shade.  The facade should be that of the brighter colors so that it reflects light and reduces need for extra heating.

Using shutters and blinds on the windows the temperature of living quarters can be reduced by 8°C during the summer. Also shutters can be used to prevent heat loss during the winter by up to 10%.
