The Gardening Year

A brief insight of bits and bobs you can do in the garden this time of year.

Another Christmas has passed and we’ve cheered in another new year with the usual cobias amounts of parties and celebrations and finally taken down those Christmas trees so gracefully adorned over the festive period.
The last thing on your mind is to probably head on out into the garden and start a make-over but just a few little jobs here and there can make all the difference and keep things looking reasonable until the weather breaks and the garden decides to start its wake process.
Christmas trees can be a pain to get rid of after the big day and the last thing you should do is just dump it illegally!
So many resources get wasted this time of year disposing of dumped trees that people couldn’t be bothered to recycle and this is annoying because they benefit your compost heap, just cut them up and throw them on easy peasy! If you cant be bothered with that, many local councils offer a tree recycling scheme were they dispose of it for you so might be worth contacting them for advice, I have two trees every year to find a new home and choose to put them on the compost heap so can i get some more use out of them when they have served there purpose.

Even though the weather has not been to good lately I have been out doing a little tidying up and sorting out the odd shrub that has lost its way in my garden, its amazing how quickly things can get out of hand even at this time of year if the garden is left to its own devices!
I have a couple of beautiful golden yellow climbing roses that have been freshly tidied up and supported back on to there trellises, they flower there socks off in the summer and need little work so a little tender loving care this time of year pays dividends when the time comes.
Some evergreen shrubs can also do with a little care at this time of year and benefit from a slight shaping just to keep things looking nice, I have a californian lilac in my garden that just goes mad in the growing stakes and always gets a bit of a trim just to keep it looking a nice ball shape!
