Some of The World’s Most Deadly Plants

This is a partial listing of some of the most dangerous plants in the world.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of plants on this earth that are dangerous to humans and animals. But there are far too many to list here, so I’ve included a few that are known to be the most threatening. But no matter what, you should not eat any plant that is not familiar to you, for risk of dangerous side effects.

Cassava Root- This one may surprise you. Cassava is a common root that is a food staple to tribes in Africa and other places such as the Amazon rain forest. It is also the plant that you get Tapioca from, so remember that the next time you are eating your pudding. The root must be ground up, soaked, and boiled to separate it from its poison. It is highly deadly because that poison is Cyanide.

Elephant’s Ear-This contains Calcium Oxalate, which if ingested, can cause severe internal rashes and bleeding that make the mouth and throat feel as if they are on fire.

Castor Bean-This has been called the world’s most poisonous plant. Just one or two beans can kill an adult in minutes, as this seed contains Ricin.

Nightshade- This plant contains the toxin Atropine. Even from a small amount, you can lose your vocal abilities, have breathing problems, and seizures. Oddly enough though, most farm animals seem to be immune to it.

English Yew- Almost the entire plant is poisonous. It can quickly cause you to become paralyzed, cause convulsions, and stop your heart. There is no known antidote.

Rosary Pea- This plant is almost always fatal when chewed or swallowed. It contains the toxin Abrin, which leads to fever, vomiting, edema, hyper-excitability, seizures, dysfunction of the GI system, renal degeneration, bladder and eye hemorrhaging, and internal lesions.

Oleander- Once again, most of this plant is dangerous. One leaf can kill an adult easily, but even exposure to the the branches, berries, and flowers has been known to be fatal. If swallowed, it simultaneously attacks the digestive tract, nervous system, and cardiovascular system.

Water Hemlock-It has a similar appearance to the edible Parsnip, which has led to being accidentally eaten. But this root contains sap that causes severe convulsions, with even a tiny piece being fatal. It has been named The Most Violently Toxic Plant in North America.

Manzanilla Tree- You may wonder how a tree can hurt someone, but it isn’t just the fruit that’s threatening. The tree does resemble an apple tree, so the deception does make it more deadly. But all parts are so toxic that when burned, the smoke can cause blindness. It also contains a milky white resin that drips from the tree, and can cause horrible blisters on your skin.

There are other plants out there that are equally as dangerous, but these are some of the top contenders. So no matter what, use caution when in contact with any unfamiliar plants. And possibly consult a professional.
