Recycle Materials as Rustic Outdoor Decorations

Old household items can be used to create the perfect outdoor decor for a rustic cabin or log home. Find new uses for old items and add charm to your rustic environment.

Create primitive or rustic decorative items by recycling old household items. A few creative touches can turn an empty can or old piece of furniture into an outdoor ornament perfect for a primitive country porch.

Coffee Can Lights

Turn old coffee cans into tin lanterns with a small hammer, nail, and a tin-punch pattern. After punching the design into the metal, fill with outdoor-safe lights or Christmas tree lights and plug in for a warm glow during non-bug season. For a lantern effect, drill a hole in the bottom and poke outdoor-safe bulbs through the hole, secure, then hang as a string of porch lanterns.

Citronella Tray

Recycle a few flat tuna fish cans and an old baking tray to create a cozy outdoor centerpiece. Paint or artificially “rust” your tuna cans, then fill with water and float individual citronella or ordinary votive candles. Line them on the tray and place on an outdoor table.

Game Top Table

Convert an old end table into an rustic game table for your porch or deck. Hand paint a design or use stencils to create a checkerboard, Parcheesi design, or backgammon board. Cut wooden pieces from a dowel or old peg clothespins — paint them and store in an old cigar box or rusty tin pail on top.

Baskets and Dried Arrangements

Recycle old baskets by adding a little brown paint or wood stain to add age. Fill with dried flowers, dried corn silk or corn ears, or even colorful fall leaves.

Add rustic character to your outdoor decor and put a few old items to good use at the same time. A little creativity and imagination can convert an old household good into something unique for a rustic setting.
