My Garden – Azalea

A very slow growing bush with amazing results.

What can I say about the Azalea bush.  Very slow starting out.  I bought my first two Azaleas about six years ago.  I was very disappointed with them.  I had no idea that it would take so long for them to start to grow.  I tried experimenting with them and did different things to each.  HINT:  watch the fertilizer that you use.  I make a big mistake on one of them and put to much fertilizer on it and totally burn it up.  There was nothing left but a dried up bunch of sticks.  I do not use anything other than Miracle Grow on them now.  As I said they are slow starting but now my blooms are very impressive and I look forward to seeing them each year and they are really starting to fill out.

  This is my first bush.

This is the third one that I bought, about 4 years ago and this is the first year that it has been in full bloom.  I am really pleased with this coloration and the blooms stayed on for a couple of weeks.  Nice.

This is the last one that I have, much the same as the first but a little smaller.  Blooms turned out very nice this year.

Azaleas are a flowering shrub related to the Rhododendron family.  Azaleas bloom in spring and their blossoms may last for several weeks.  I have Azaleas both in the direct sun and in shaded areas.  I find that both work very well.  The more open the area where the Azalea is planted the more chances are that it can receive winter wind damage.

Azaleas are generally smaller than rhododendrons and have one blossom per stem, where the rhododendrons usually have many clusters of blossoms.

Azaleas are slow growing, do best in acidic soil, needs very little fertilizer and some plants need regular pruning.  Azaleas are native to several areas including Asia, Europe and North America.

In the Chinese culture, the azalea is known as “thinking of home bush”.

Azalea Festival at Nezu Jinja.  That is just amazing.
