Mughal Gardens, Delhi

The visit to Delhi, the capital city of India, is incomplete without visiting the picturesque Mughal Gardens. Mughal Gardens is one of the most beautiful gardens in the entire country and a very important place of interest in the city.

To start with, let us see what is Mughal Garden. A Mughal Garden is a garden built by the Mughals in the Islamic style of architecture. The style was influenced by the Persian style garden style called Charbagh where the quadrilateral garden is divided by walkways or pools. Right from the first Mughal emperor Babur, almost all the Mughal emperors were fond of gardening and constructed many Mughal Gardens. Many of those gardens are found across various places in India and Paksitan such as Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb, Shalimar Bagh and Lahore Fort.

Although there are many gardens built by Mughals and by others following the Mughal style, only the Mughal Gardens located at the backyard of Rashrapati Bhavan in New Delhi is very popular in this name. It is definitely one of the best gardens in terms of layout as well as maintenance in India. It was not built by any Mughal emperor; it was constructed by the British. As the architecture was based on the typical style of Mughal garden, the garden is called as “Mughal Gardens”.

Whatever be the benefits and perks that the President of India get might not match the opportunity to contributing and maintaining this extraordinarily beautiful garden. The public are not lucky enough; they can merely have a quick glance at the gardens after waiting in the long queue.

The gardens remain open to public in February every year for about less than a month (during the spring season in Delhi). The garden incorporates not only Mughal style but also English lanscaping style. You can find different varieties of flowers in the gardens, which you cannot normally see anywhere else.

The main garden is divided into a grid of squares and six lotus shaped fountains are located in the garden. There are two longitudinal strips of garden at a higher level on either side of the main garden, which are called as terrace gardens. There is a long garden on the west side of the main garden called as Purdha garden. It ends at the circular garden. It is predominantly a rose garden. All varieties of beautiful rose flowers are found in this garden. The walls of the gardens are covered with different types of creepers. Around the circular garden, there are some nurseries located.

If you stay in Delhi during the spring season, do not miss Mughal Gardens. You will get an opportunity to see varieties of flowers in one place, some of them which you would have seen only in pictures and some of them which you wouldn’t even heard of.
