How to Stake and Tie Garden Plants for Optimum Growth

Garden vegetables grow better when they are off the ground.

Certain garden plants grow tall and/or grow in vines, like tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, etc., and these garden plants need to be up off the ground for the best vegetable production.

To stake most garden plants that grow in vine form, a simple wood or metal stake approximately 4 feet tall driven into the ground near the garden plant will work. Metal stakes are the best choice, they last longer and draw static electricity to your garden for better garden plant growth, but that is another article.

After you drive the stakes into the ground near the garden plant, loosely tie the plant to the stake using 2 inch strips of panty hose. The panty hose is flexible and will not cut into the garden plant.

Metal fencing can be used to train cucumber vines to grow up, loosely tie them to the metal fencing with panty hose also.

Bamboo poles are excellent to use to train bean vines to grow on. or you can use the method of companion planting and plant beans with corn or sunflowers, and the bean vines will grow up the stalks, no tying necessary.

Rolled up chicken wire is good to place under melon vines to keep the melons off of the ground.
