How to Make a Upside Down Tomato Hanger

How to grow tomatoe’s upside down. How to make an easy hanger for tomato plant.

Tomatoes are very versatile plants they can grow up in stands, along fences and even hanging upside down from a porch. Two of my favorite ways are to grow tomatoes up on strings hanging from the ceiling; you can do this your home in front of a large indoors or in a green house and of course on a porch or balcony. Make sure to have a good strong hook above in the ceiling so you can tighten the string and pull higher as the plant gets bigger and stronger and begins to fruit. The second way is in a bucket hanging upside down, since this way is a lot easier and less work here are the step by step instructions on how to make your own.

  1. If you are not buying tomatoes plants be sure to start your tomatoes in early spring indoors, grow until 3-5 inches tall or has strong stem and roots.
  2. Then get a large 15-30 gallon plastic bucket with lid, make sure it is clean and hasn’t been used for any chemicals or toxic materials.
  3. Cut 1 ½  -  2 ½  inch hole in bottom center of bucket. I recommend using a drill to drill a hole along edge of where your circle is. Once hole is made use knife, sharp scissors, small hand saw or jigsaw to cut out hole. Please be careful, wear gloves and get help if needed
  4. Once hole is cut, gently place tomato plant through the hole so it is upside down.
  5. Fill bucket with good nutrient full soil, about 1/2 way or 2/3 if smaller bucket,
  6. Water plant and feed if necessary, cover with lid. ( optional….if lid is white concider paint outside black before using to keep bucket dark, consider this for the whole bucket if it is white or clear. Do not paint bottom of bucket where plant grows from
  7. Use handles to hang from strong hook in porch or balcony roof or ceiling.

Keep watered , top up soil as need, if needed. Feed regularly and/ or sprinkle some Epson salts over soil ( top of bucket)  for stronger roots. Spray with organic pesticide if necessary, and watch you plant grow and produce yummy tomatoes all season.

  1. This is really good. My mother likes plants and wants to have a tomato plant. I will show this to her. Great job! :)

  2. I’m going to show this to my mom because she’s been wanting to buy one of those upside down tomato plants marketed on tv.
