Growing Potatoes in Bags

For small gardens, growing potatoes in bags is a good space-saving solution.
This year I tried growing potatoes in bags, because they take up so much room in my rather small vegetable patch.
The Bags
The bags were on sale in packs of three at a nearby garden center, and it was simply a question of opening them up, filling them with soil and a seed potato, and leaving nature to do the rest. With the very wet summer we’ve had here in the UK, there was hardly ever any need to water them.
The Crop
I emptied one of the bags as an early crop during the summer, and the potatoes were small and new and quite delicious.
I’ve just emptied the second bag, and the potatoes tumbled out onto the ground undamaged and without any pests.
There’s a full bag (the third one, not yet emptied), an empty bag, and the crop of potatoes from one bag.
Advantages
- It saves space in your vegetable patch.
- The potatoes are undamaged because they’re not dug out.
- They seem to be pest free.
- You don’t need to keep earthing them up.
- The bags fold flat for storage and can be used again.
I’ll definitely be using this method to grow potatoes again next year. It was just so easy.

This is so interesting. My sister gardens and I know she would like to try this method of growing potatoes. Did you bury your potato bag after putting the dirt and potatoes in, or did you
leave them above ground? I will have to tell her about this.

Ruby, I didn’t bury the bags, I just lined them up on a paved area that I have next to my vegetable patch.

I am definitely going to have to try this. We live in town and all of our gardening is in containers of different kinds (my carrots are in a deep plastic box with holes in the bottom, and my lettuce was in old tires). This sounds really good. Yes, the picture makes a big difference because I was wondering at first if you put them in big trash bags.

grown new spud,s in bag but not sure when to harvest the stem,s are very thick and just starting to flower.any answer,s very welcome.

I’m growing mine in the front garden in rubble bags. This is the first time i’ve tried this and I’m looking forward to the results. I understand Jamie Oliver does the same thing aswell. Not sure when to harvest my spuds
