Grow Your Own Depression Garden
There are many reasons that you should and might want to start growing your own depression garden.
The first is the same as any traditional gardener that you simply enjoy growing things. You might like the time outside or the look or smell of a garden, maybe you fill a sense of accomplishment watching your garden grow. The second reason though is what separates a regular garden from a depression garden. A depression garden is a food garden. With the rising cost of food and everything and the economy doing so poorly everyone might have to start making a depression garden soon.
You will want to get particular kinds of plants for a depression garden. Flowers will do not belong in a depression garden they don’t serve a purpose. A depression garden will have fruits and vegetables with some herbs if you wish but even herbs should be kept at a minimum they will take up water, sunlight, space, time, and minerals that your other plants could use instead.
Any old fruit or vegetable wont do either you need to get plants that produce quickly, in bulk, or produce a lot of calories or vitamins. Some examples of good plants for a depression garden include beans because they offer protein in one of its healthiest forms, they grow quickly, mature quickly, and for those with black thumbs they are easy to grow. Children often grow bean in school so they cant be that hard to grow.
Tomatoes are another good choice they offer many nutrients, many will grow on a vine, and they are useful in many different foods. Potatoes are another good choice. The potato is easy to grow, full of calories, and has many healthy nutrients. Of course any other plants you like to eat are good to add.
Some plants that may not be practical include grapes or some berries, which may be hard to grow. Though some berries such as blackberries need little help from the planter and will thrive if left on there own. Peppers are also not particularly good to grow but if you think you have enough room to grow enough that you can sale locally at a farmers market they are a good choice as many kind of peppers sale for a lot for their weight making them a nice cash crop for you.
Whatever you decide make sure you grow what you like to eat. Even if it is not as efficient a plant if you wont eat something it doesn’t matter how good it is or how fast it matures.
