Grow an American Flag Garden

Celebrate this Fourth of July with a stellar flower garden shaped like the American flag. With a few gardening tips, red, white, and blue blossoms can form the stars and stripes for all to see and admire.

Create a patriotic display in the form of the American flag for your lawn or garden. A few creative blossom choices can create the perfect Fourth of July decoration for your lawn.

Draw Your Design

Decide how big you want your flag to be and measure off the section of your garden; turn the earth using a space or shovel. Use stakes and lines to mark off each stripe section and the blue square as well.

Choose Your Seeds

Planting from seed is best for a bulk project like this, since it saves time and money. Sow them close together, since you can weed out extras and you want the flowers to be close together to create the flag effect. Make sure the packets you choose are color-specific, to avoid a finding rogue colors in your flag.

Finding the right flowers is important. Petunia varieties are great choices because of the brilliant colors and long blooming periods (if dead blossoms are removed). Other brilliant blossoms will also work, such as zinnias, mums, and asters, which have a variety of shades and colors. Just make sure the blossoms have similar blooming seasons and similar height.

Plant Your Flag

Sow your seeds at the same time, to avoid an age difference between plants. Water well and use plant food and fertilizers to enhance or speed up growth. Propogate a few extra plants of each color in containers in case something damages part of your flower bed or a few plants should die.

Enjoy your American flag during the summer months and proudly display your patriotism for all to see. The beautiful garden bed allows you to show off your gardening skills and enjoy a Fourth of July celebration all summer long.
