Grow a Bird Garden in Your Backyard

Fill your yard with a variety of birds by landscaping to attract them. Fruit trees, berry bushes, and seed varieties are among the easy-to-plant options that draw birds to your yard.
Planting a “bird garden” as part of your landscape and supplement your regular feeders with plants the birds will enjoy all summer. So long as you don’t have a garden to protect from the hungry birds, you can create a beautiful landscaped atmosphere that both you and the birds will enjoy.
Fruit Trees
Dwarf and large fruit trees, especially cherry trees, attract flocks of birds to their branches to sample the fruit; other varieties also entice birds who prey on fruit-loving insects. You’ll need more than one tree in order to cross-pollinate and produce fruit (check your selection for planting recommendation).
Berry Bushes
Tempting raspberries, thornless blackberries, and even strawberries attract plenty of birds and make beautiful shrubs, borders, and container plants. You can experiment with drying some varieties for winter distribution, too.
Summer Sunflowers and Seed Plants
Sunflowers and other seed-filled blossoms and plants encourage birds to land and sample these treats. The tall flowers look beautiful in a flower bed; clinging seed-pod vines (like snap peas) make lovely climbing varieties along a fence or trellis.
Providing a bird-friendly landscape is another step in creating a haven for your feathered friends. Along with the usual bird baths and feeders, a few choice plants will draw birds to visit your yard again and again.
