A typical gardener need not be a person who completely engages himself in gardening activities day and night. But with changing times the gardener also evolved into a mixed personality.
A person who involves himself in any gardening activities can be called as gardener. Either he does it for pleasure as a hobby, to get food in the form of vegetables, to educate himself about the plant kingdom or works day and night as a duty in gardening. The different people from different classes of society, lifestyle and other things are nowadays involved in one or other aspect of gardening.
A gardener takes care of a garden, small plot of plants and trees or a big public garden. He sows the seeds and takes care of their growth. Protecting the plants from pests and other normal gardening problems, providing water regularly, using different techniques of gardening to modify the plants, and decorate or improve their look and worth are some of the functions of a gardener.
Some gardeners learn about different aspects of gardening, techniques for protecting, growing, and creating different breeds. They also visit botanical gardens where they gain a lot of insight into the scientific and technical knowledge in gardening. A gardener buys new or rare plants, fruits, and vegetable related plants to implant in the garden.
In the modern times we can also find garden designers. Garden designers like architect engineers involve in the designing of gardens and landscapes for gardening. They do not involve themselves in the practical aspects of gardening. There are some notable gardeners in the history as well as celebrity gardeners featured in the television.
