Leafy greens are an excellent source of vitamins A, B1, B2, and C, they are high in fiber, manganese, folate and other essential nutrients your body needs to stay healthy, keep your cholesterol down, and protect your heart.

Container vegetable gardening is gaining popularity as more and more people look to their own backyards, patios and balconies as a source of food. I can’t think of a better way to save money on food than to grow your own leafy green vegetables. Romaine, salad bowl and butter leaf lettuces are great options for this little wagon planter, and each have their own distinct flavor. Rather than harvesting the entire head, the larger, outer leaves can be removed as needed, leaving the plant to continue growing.

What You’ll Need

  • Wagon
  • Drill and 1/4 inch metal drill bit
  • Organic or all natural potting soil
  • Romaine, green leaf lettuce, and/or spinach seeds
  • Peat moss

Method

Drill three rows of holes, three or four inches apart for drainage in the bottom of the wagon. Fill the wagon with good potting soil to 1″ from the top. Sprinkle four rows of seeds on top of the soil, and cover with a thin layer of peat moss. Be careful to not wash away the seeds when you’re watering. Place in a sunny location. Keep the soil moist, but not wet.

When the summer heat arrives, move your lettuce wagon into a cooler, partially shady spot to prevent leaf burn.

Properly taken care of, your salad garden should last several weeks.
