Learn the basics of attracting birds to your garden in three easy steps.
Gardens are delightful to look at but even more so with beautiful birds chirping away! If you are envious of your neighbor’s bird filled garden and want to attract these winged friends as well then there are a few steps to follow.
- Birds are happiest when they have a dwelling they can call home. Birdhouses can offer the ideal shelter, however, building your own is also an option if you are crafty. Birdhouses come in all shapes and sizes so make sure to choose one that will attract the type of bird you wish to see fluttering around in your garden. If design is an issue, you may have to shop around and make sure to pick one that suits you garden theme.
Your new birdhouse(s) should be hidden away from the elements and unsuspecting predators. A bird’s home is no different than ours in the way of comfort, so offer them plenty of nesting materials to personalize their space. Twigs, moss, string, and hair. You can even recycle your dryer lint.
- In order to entice birds to your haven, a water feature must be present. Birdbaths are ideal and offer a place to swim and drink. Larger gardens can accomodate multiple birdbaths, just make sure to place them in different locations such as sunny areas as well as shady areas. Not only are you creating a sanctuary for various birds, but you’re also adding a nice decorative touch. Now you have shelter and water. All that’s left is to offer food.
- A great way to ensure your new feathered friends stay awhile is to cater to their tummies. You can never go wrong with a mixture of various seeds, but If you want to specifically attract a type of bird, then your local garden store can offer some advice.
All that’s left to do now is be patient and wait for the birds to fly upon your new bird garden sanctuary. Once they find you they will be more than happy to frop by every year!
