Choose Leylandii for a Stunning Hedge

Leylandii is a very popular choice for growing a new hedge.

Leylandii is a very popular choice for growing a new hedge. Reasons for this popularity, besides looking fantastic when established, is Its fast growth and ability to grow well in most soil types.

The ability to achieve new growth of up to four feet each year makes Leylandii an incredible choice for rapidly establishing a fantastic hedge. Leylandii has excellent disease resistance and does not require the ongoing use of fertilisers to promote its growth.

Four feet in one year would be the maximum growth you could achieve from Leylandii in excellent growing conditions where the correct ground preparation has been carried out and the plant has access to the right amount of sunshine. A shadier location in the garden will slow down the plants growth.

People who enjoy gardening and can handle a bit of digging will find it easy to plant a hedge on their land. Plan ahead to make sure that new plants are not sat in pots, waiting to go into the ground for long. Keep your new plants well watered until you are ready for planting.

Green or Gold Leylandii are the two types most commonly used to create Leylandii hedges. Whilst some gardeners choose to create a hedge with only one variety, there is no reason why you cannot mix plants to create your hedge if you prefer. Different plants have different growth patterns but many combinations of plants can be pruned together to form a solid hedge.

When you are set for planting, you will need to mark a line for the middle of the hedge using two stakes with a string or line of some sort pulled tightly between the two for guidance. When you have positioned your line, you could either dig out a trench for planting in, or evenly spaced holes. The size of your plants will determine the spacing to some extent. Smaller seedlings are commonly positioned approximately two feet apart and the hole you prepare for your plants should be at least the depth of the pot and double its width to make sure roots have lots of room to spread.

To begin with, plants need regular water to boost their growth and get established. Once they have rooted they will start to fill out to form a beautiful hedge.

Regular pruning is essential to encourage healthy growth and keep your hedge in great shape.
