A Dandelion Whine..
Dandelions a Annoying Weed or A Lovely Yellow Flower.
I know you think I made a spelling mistake in the title. Well the thing is here I am with a weed removing contraption,
going all around my garden and lawn, and pulling out dandelions and putting them in a bucket.
Thinking I am really getting somewhere, when I look up at my neighbours yard and see a sea of yellow.
I know in a couple of days those lovely dandelions will be seeds floating over to my garden.
Just like a invasion.
I take my weed thingy and my bucket and sit at the end of my garden on my old wrought iron bench.
And just hang my head in defeat. Just then my three year old Grandson comes up to me and asks ” whats wrong?”
So I explain about the dandelions. He looks at me with surprize and says ” but Mummu they are flowers”,
I think they are pretty”. I say “I know honey but they are just weeds to me”.
He then wanders over and picks one and says ” Mummu do you have any wine?”
I say ” I don’t”, so he says ” lets make some”. I proceed to tell him it is too much work and he says I will help you.
We can do it together. I laugh and an old memory comes to mind of picking dandelions in early summer.
And giving it to our canary Mickey, he loved to eat those fragrant flowers.
I realize I sometimes forget that even weed have purpose and one mans weed is another mans flower.
Dandelions can be used for food and herbal medicine. They are a rich source of vitamins and contain some minerals.
The leaves can be used in salads and teas the flowers for wine the roots as a coffee substitute.
So when life give you weeds you can whine or make wine or tea.

So true, weeds serve a purpose as well. Ah, my dad use to make dandelion wine… it was so sweet and wonderful…. but the yellow fingers we had for days from picking the tops was not.

I love this one, Laura! Aren’t grandkids a lot of fun? They keep us on our toes, for sure. Love, Kharla
P.S. My mother use to batter the blossoms, then fry them. Where she heard about this, Im not sure!

Sounds like a special moment between you two. I know we have a lot of dandelions when the grass needs cut. We have this super man that cuts our grass and since daddy decided he was so good we are going to give him an extra five dollars than he asked, he usually gets rid of our weeds. WE give him cold drinks, Friday my mom gave him an ice cream sandwich and he was so appreciative. He is also the nicest guy you would ever meet.
Inever heard of dandelion wine?
