While some toddlers enjoy bath times, hair-washing time may altogether be another story. Having their head wet can be terrifying for many kids, the most obvious reason being fear of getting water and suds in their eyes and nose. To make hair washing fun and manageable, try these tips.
- Give the child some control. Give her a dry wash cloth to hold over her face so she can feel she has control over getting water and soup in her face and eyes. Or, tell her at each stage of the washing what you will do next. This way you help her learn to exercise control over the situation–hold the washcloth over her face, tilt her head back, or shut her eyes close.
- Make her comfortable. If your child prefers to lie on her back on the kitchen counter to get her hair washed using the sprayer, then don’t insist on doing it during bath time while she’s seated in the tub. If getting into the tub with your kid does the trick, then by all means do so.
- Involve your child in every step of the process. Don’t just wash her hair–wash her hair with her. Consider having her choose the baby shampoo at the grocery or transferring the content into a bottle featuring her favorite cartoon character. Before wash time, let her approve water temperature or play with her favorite toy.
- Use appropriate “props”. If wearing swimming goggles will calm your child’s fear of getting water and suds in her eyes, then let her. Maybe using a toy watering can for rinsing (and make her pretend it’s raining) would make the activity more fun for her.
- Sing a song or tell a story while washing your child’s hair to distract her and keep her mind off the water and suds.

A good tip to try too is to get it over and done with quickly. In our case, my baby nieces don’t have time to dislike having their hair washed ’cause they’re caught unawares! LOL

control is very important
I always ask – “do you want to get your own hair wet, or shall I do it?” – rather than “do you want your hair washed?”
