There has been a great deal of attention given to virtual worlds for kids recently; Are they appropriate for children? Should parents monitor their kids when they are interacting in a virtual world? Who will they meet? These are all very good questions for a parent to be asking.

A virtual world is like a computer generated of fantasy land, where almost anything imaginable can be created. It is populated with thousands or even millions of real life, real time users, from all walks of life and all corners of the globe. Give them some guidelines on how to spot a potential problem and tell them to come to you as soon as one arises. This is an area of education that is often tragically overlooked. Good parenting is first and foremost about teaching a child to care for themselves. One day you will not be around to look out for them, and they will have to rely on the things you taught, them from their earliest years, to go about their own lives.

It is also an excellent idea to monitor children’s online activity and interaction, but not too much. Give them the opportunity to make decisions for themselves before you step in.
