Toddler Education for Playing Inside

No matter how much you remove dangerous items from the reach of your toddler, you can’t prevent everything. But, you can help by teaching them what is safe and what isn’t inside your home.

After you have removed most of the hazardous objects and taking accident prevention steps, you will still what to teach your child about situation that can get them hurt. This education includes what is safe and what is not safe, respect for their body, and safety habits beginning with a warning vocabulary.

The first step in toddler education before introducing outside dangers or playground safety is by teaching your child a warning vocabulary. A warning vocabulary includes words like hot, sharp, and ouch. If your child hasn’t already picked up on these words, then it won’t take much for them to pick up on them, but there are steps you can take to tell them learn.

Use safe objects to begin teaching beginning with the word hot. By using the word hot while having your child touch the outside of a warm coffee cup is a good place to start. A coffee cup won’t be hot enough for them to get burn, but will bring the word and touch sensation together for your child. This won’t work for sharp objects because of the possibility to get hurt, but remind them they are sharp and not a toy.

Bath time is a fun adventure for a child, but you should not leave your child unattended while they are in the tub. Remember to take and have everything ready before you go in. Explain and follow the water safety rules when you are at the pool. Explain before you go that the water can be dangerous if you don’t follow the rules which include not rough housing or running while you are there. Be sure to set the rule how they are not supposed to be around the water whether its in the bath tub or at the pool without a grownup.

Inside education also includes choking and poisonous discussions and rules as well. When surrounded by objects that can be dangerous, explain how they don’t belong in their mouth because they could choke. Set the rule they are to always sit down when they are eating and they can not run with food in their mouths. Other then it’s rude, it is also a hazard to talk with your mouth full too. Other conversations over food is you need to teach your child not to eat or drink anything that wasn’t given the them. As they grow, you will expand it to not taking anything from a stranger, but for not it’s just what isn’t given to them. Teach them how only food goes in their mouth. Medicine is not candy is another important lesson which will have to be repeated just as often as everything else.

There are many areas in our homes that can be dangerous and one way to prevent an accident is to teach our child what is good for them and what isn’t. This begins with a warning vocabulary and going to safety rules. These rules, explanations, and conversation will help your child to understand what will hurt them and what will not hurt them.
