This article explores the strong connection that exists between identical twins. Is it a result of intuition or shared DNA?
Last month, identical twin friars who were inseparable for most of their lives, passed away only hours apart at the age of 92, according to NPR. Currently in the tennis world, identical twins Bob and Mike Bryan dominate the doubles competition. They just won their 11th major title at Wimbledon this year. Many have noticed a strange connection between these sets of identical twins. Bob and Mike Bryan have been observed as sharing identical movements and actions both on and off the court. Similar to the twin friars, Bob and Mike lived and practiced together for most of their lives. These sets of twins seem to have an unspoken ability to communicate their thoughts and emotions with each other. Is this special connection just a product of shared life experiences similar to an old married couple, or is it intuition?
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines intuition as “the power or faculty of attaining to direct knowledge or cognition without evident rational thought.” Often I have trusted my intuition in addition to rational thought to help guide me in making difficult decisions. Do identical twins share a special intuition-the ability to sense how the other is feeling or acting? Does this intuition allow them to communicate or influence their actions? To explore this connection, I thought about all of the sets of identical twins that I had been acquainted with over the years. Ten years ago I had lived with a set of identical twins and I had just spent the last year working with two third grade girls who are also identical twins. Through these experiences, I had witnessed something more than just a sibling connection. My sister and I are exactly 3 and a half years apart. Having grown up together we shared many life experiences. We know each other well and have been known to pick out the exact same dress while shopping separately in a store. However, between identical twins, the sibling connection seems to be much stronger. Some identical twins share stories of buying the same brand-name item, such as a sweater or furniture, on the same day-even miles apart! Their connection is so intense that minutes apart often feel like hours. I often witnessed this when one twin would come home from work and immediately ask where her twin sister was. One identical twin or the other seemed to be able to sense if something was wrong even before she walked through the door. Can this potential intuition shared by identical twins be scientifically proven?
