One of the most wonderful yet challenging experiences that you will ever have in a lifetime is being a parent. This is especially true for women, who would have to deal with every stage of the pregnancy up to the time that the baby is born and raised. As first time parents, you might be feeling anxious because you would have to learn on-the-job. This is perfectly fine, although you do need to arm yourself with as much information as you can about raising a baby.

Let’s take the task of changing nappies (God råd om bleskift is the Danish term for that) as an example. Although you might have seen people go through the steps for change of nappy a dozen times – but it’s still different when you are the one to actually do it. As such, you need to prepare and practice the steps for change of nappy. Watch online videos or have an expert mom show you how to do it. This way, you would not be worried about having the adhesive of the diaper stick to your baby’s skin or not have the baby’s bottom clean enough, because you already know which steps to follow.

Top Tips to Face Up to the Challenges of Being a New Parent

Aside from changing diapers, there are plenty of other aspects of being a first time parent that you would have to consider as challenges instead of frustrations. To help you out, here is a list of some mistakes that you can avoid, as well as general tips on how you can face up to the challenge of being a first time mom or dad:

·         Don’t believe everything you hear, read or watch.

When you read one dozen books on parenting with different authors, there are also twelve different voices telling you how to raise your child, especially a newborn. Although it is perfectly fine to seek the opinion of your best friend, your mom or your paediatrician, it is still entirely up to you as a parent to decide how to care for and nurture your child.

 ·         As a wife, just because you have a baby does not mean that you should neglect your spouse.

Once you give birth, your days and nights might be filled with everything about your baby – but it does not mean that you should neglect your spouse. If you need to, hire a baby sitter who can care for your child while you and your husband go on a date. The time away from your child will be good for the both of you and for your marriage.

·         Harassed first time parents may think that they need to spend all their time with the baby, but they need to spend time on themselves as well.

If you’re a mom who is caring for your child the entire time that your husband is in the office, take an hour or two away from the house to take care of yourself while he babysits. The happier and less stressed you are as a parent, the better you will be able to care for your child.

·         Don’t overbuy on things that your baby will eventually outgrow.

Kids these days grow so fast so when shopping for baby clothes, make sure to only get enough because they will easily outgrow them. The money that you can save is best left for your child’s college education.

There are 1,001 details and quite a few challenges along the way that you would have to face up to as a parent – but there’s nothing to match the experience so enjoy it as much as you can.
