Studies show children set about 20,000 house fires a year.
What happens is they tend to hide matches and play with them when they are alone especially around Halloween and pumpkin time.
So make sure your children understand how dangerous fire is. Explain what could happen if they cause a fire that their home and toys could be lost and that people could get hurt and burned. Tell them they should never ever play with matches or lighters or candles that are lit. They should tell you immediately if they see these things lying around.
There are some great games on-line that make fire safety fun www.usfa.fema.gov/kids/flash.shtm and www. sparkydog.org. Finally create a fire escape plan together and let your children draw a map showing the route. Then practice your plan (x4) times a year especially at night when most fires occurs.
