Simple Tips on How to Teach Your Kids to Save Money

Many kids nowadays do not realize and understand the value of earning and spending money. Mot were not oriented that saving andinvesting are very essential even if they are still young. As parents, you play a vital role in this aspect.

Parents should be able to teach their kids on how to save some money. The kids should be able to understand the idea of money-saving and investment as early as childhood. This will enable them to get prepared early in learning on how to manage money, as they grow old.

Below are some ways on how you can teach your kids to save money:

1. Your kids should be oriented about the essence of money. Once your kids have been taught on how to count, that is the right moment for parents to orient them the true essence and meaning of money. Parents should do this on a consistent basis and discuss with them in simple ways and do this as frequent as possible so that they may be able to recall what you explained to them.

2. Make sure to always explain to them the essence of saving money. Make them realize the importance of saing money and how it will be a big factor in thir lives. It is very essential that you listen to their questions about money and be able to answer them right there and then.

3. When handing-out their allowances, you need to give them in denominations. Then you can teach them that they should not spend everything but keep a bill for future use. You can encourage them to follow such advise by explaining to them that the money can be saved and they can buy toys or anything they want if they have saved some money.

4. You can also encourage them to earn their own money. You can do this starting at your own home. Say you ask them to clean their rooms or do the dishes in exhange for some money. This idea of working for a small amount of money will make them realize that money is something they have earned and so it is something they should spend wisely.

5. You can motivate them to save money by giving them as a gift some cool piggy banks where they can fill in coins and wait until they get full. You can also open their own bank accounts and let them deposit money once they have saved some amount from their allowances or from the money they’ve earned doing some household chores. Keep motivating them always through this idea.

Children can not learn the importance of saving money overnight. Parents should be very patient in teaching their children the real essence of money and how to relate it in all of their activities. It is easier for children to learn this if parents are patient enough and consistent in molding them to become good at managing money.

  3. This is really good advice. Let me tell you a little story about my daughter when she was little. My wife and I decided to give our seven year old some chores and in return she would get an allowance for successfully completing the chores every week. All went well for a while. Then one time she spent some of her money on an item she really wanted. A few days later she came back and said she wanted some money for another purchase. We told her we paid her her allowance once a month, at the beginning of the month. She told us, with a look of slight confusion on her face, that the store kept her money when she bought her item. Her first lesson in economics.
