Sign Language – The Way to Communicate with Your Baby
Babies can sign before they can speak. May be you don’t realize, but they do use their hands to communicate with you. They are clapping to show you that they’re happy. They push their spoon away to tell you that they don’t want to eat the food you offered. They point to an object to tell you what they want. But without your help, the number of signs that your baby will use is very limited.
So, what is the benefit of teaching your baby sign language? A lot. Do you know why your baby cries? It is because they want to tell you something! May be they want milk, or want to eat, or want their diaper to be changed, or may be they just want to play with their favorite teddy bear! But because they can’t speak, all that they do were just crying and crying and crying. That would be different if your baby can sign. Signing baby can tell you specifically what they want with their hands. That means less crying, less fussing, and less stressful time for you! Sign language is like a “bridge” which enabled babies and parents to communicate at an early age. Not only it is reducing frustration for both, but also creating a special bond that is definitely important for your child development.
Still, few parents are afraid to teach their babies sign language. They afraid their babies won’t talk because they used to use sign language to communicate. This is definitely wrong. In contrarily, babies who use sign language is tend to speak sooner with larger vocabularies. It is so logical, isn’t it? They already able to identify things while other same-age babies still trying so hard to speak a word! When the time comes for your baby to speak, he will speak, because naturally, babies will choose the easiest way to communicate. And speak is much more easier than sign!
You can start teaching sign language to your baby at any age. However, if you decide to begin early, don’t be discourage if your baby isn’t able to sign back until he is about six months old, because at this very early age, he has limited motor skills. Teaching a baby sign language needs a lot of patient, but soon after you see the result, you’ll feel that your hard work is not useless!
