Lullabies That Rock
by B.S. Magoulas on Oct 24, 2008 with 2 Comments
For all those parents who tire of listening to loud, poorly sung children’s music, this playlist of songs by favorite artists like John Lennon, Albert Hammond Jr., Los Lobos, Buddy Holly, and Nick Drake makes the perfect lullaby mix CD.
Parenthood is filled with many beautiful little moments you’ll cherish for a lifetime. But too often, the time between them is filled with children’s music. I could name names, but it’s safe to assume that anything sung by a purple dinosaur, prepubescent pop star or wiggling Australian will make you physically ill…and that’s a sight you really don’t want your child to see. Thankfully there are many beautiful songs by real artists that will lull your stubborn ones to sleep without giving you nightmares.
The Ultimate Bedtime Playlist
Download this playlist, plug in some speakers, press the thing that makes your iPod play and start enjoying bedtime again.
- Mockingbird – James Taylor and Carly Simon
Adapted from the children’s song and sung by two greats. Though harder to find, the original by Inez and Charlie Foxx might be even better.
- Saint Behind the Glass – Los Lobos
Featuring ringing mariachi guitars and a message of quiet faith, if you weren’t already a fan of Los Lobos, this song will make you one.
- Everyday – Buddy Holly
“Every day it’s a gettin’ closer. Goin’ faster than a roller coaster. Love like yours will surely come my way. A-hey, a-hey-hey.”
- Golden Slumbers – The Beatles
A wonderful lullaby from the fab four.
- St. Judy’s Comet – Paul Simon
Its fatherly lyrics are impossible for me to sing to my sons without a lump in my throat or a crack in my voice.
- Pink Moon – Nick Drake
A unique voice and sparse lyrics and musical arrangement combine for a one-of-a-kind good night song.
- Cartoon Music for Superheroes – Albert Hammond Jr.
Any song featuring a glockenspiel and a name like Cartoon Music for Superheroes has to be good. The fact that it’s by Albert Hammond Jr., of the Strokes, makes it even better.
- Across the Universe – The Beatles
John Lennon and the Beatles at their best.
- Beautiful Boy, Darling Boy – John Lennon
“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” and this is possibly the most heartfelt love song John Lennon ever wrote.
- Good Night – The Beatles
What drifting off to sleep sounds like.
