Let Your Child Watch and Learn The Good Stuff

It is true when people say, “children live what they learn"…

I hate when I hear a nasty word coming from a child who cannot even spell his/her name much less yelling a curse word. It sounds disgusting and degrades the parent.

I have a four year old child and she is like a sucker when it comes on to learning new things. She helps me wash, she talks how I talk and she does everything I do. There is this person that lives next door and she has a child my daughter’s age. The little girl has a very rotten mouth, and one evening I heard my daughter saying a word that was not pleasant. When I asked    ”who told you that?”, she said Jessica. Now, the mother for Jessica is a hooker and also a single parent who has nothing satisfying coming from her mouth.

I decided to stop my daughter from leaving the yard. Seeing how unhappy she looked, having no one to play with, I told her to watch the television until I got home from work; seeing that my mother doesn’t have time for her. I noticed that every time I get home, I see the TV on Nickelodeon. I didn’t have a problem since it has on cartoons and stuff her age. One evening I was sitting with her and she came and kissed me on the mouth. She went on to stick her tongue in. I explained and told her that it was wrong and she should not do it again.

I started watching TV with her and she was watching iCarly. On this program, there was a lot of boyfriend and girlfriend stuff and I realized that this was where she learnt the things she was doing. I immediately changed the station and told her not to watch iCarly again.

She started to watch Discovery Kids and I now see that she starts speaking Spanish words and washing her hand before she eats without me telling her. She also tells me to move things when I am looking for something like my slipper or else it would be harder to find.

She still watches Nickelodeon but I told my mother not to let her watch iCarly or any other series like it. Here are the cartoons and educational films that she now watches and she enjoys them:

Dora the Explorer

Dora is an educational cartoon that helps a child to learn simple Spanish words by using pictures. It also helps them to focus and think especially if they are looking for something or trying to solve a problem. Featured on Nickelodeon, CVM TV and Discovery Kids.

Diego

This is a cartoon similar to Dora only that it stars a boy instead. It portrays the same idea Dora has but boys will prefer to watch this instead of Dora. Comes on Nickelodeon, CVM TV and Discovery Kids.

Pinky Dinky Doo

This cartoon looks like drawings; I don’t know how she finds fun in it. It helps kids to be aware of things around them. Things like taking out the garbage when it is full, flushing the toilet when you use it and wash your plate when you eat from it. Ares on Discovery Kids.

Sesame-Street

This program has been around for years. It is an educational series that teaches children, even a young baby to be aware and learn new things. Here the host who is a live or cartoon person sings and makes fun while teaching. Children enjoy every moment of it and also ares on CVM TV.

Blues Clues

This is another educational film with real people in it. It teaches children fun things and educational games while making them learn at the same time. Similar to SesameStreet and comes on CVM TV, Nickelodeon and Discovery Kids.

Not like the kids learning games, preschool online games, free Spanish learning games or very funny cartoons. These are actually educational cartoons for kids. There are tons of other cartoons that divert educational materials; but these are the quickest I could think of. You just have to monitor your child on everything he/she watches and remember that they do what they see you do; so be careful!

  1. This article is very true.

  2. Very true. Children picks up things we don’t notice.

  3. Now a day we have to monitor everything that children watch. But before you hit you probably should explain first and then she will understand a little better.

  4. Being a mom to a 3 yr old, I can very well relate to your experience. My kid is glued to Playhouse Disney Channel though I limit his TV time.
