Is Your Kid Left-Handed?

A parenting issue.

Did you know that many of the world’s great artists, leaders and thinkers are left-handed? Yet lefties only make up around 10 percent of the population. So does that mean lefties are generally more gifted and creative than righties?

The right-handed individual is going to be controlled predominantly by the left side of the brain while left-handed people are controlled by the right side of the brain. The research tends to support that hypothesis — that lefties are more creative. The right hemisphere of the brain is where we know a lot of the creativity is centered.

When a person is right handed, according to scientific theory, the left hemisphere of the brain is the dominant hemisphere. The left hemisphere of the brain is said to be the rational side of the brain. This side of the brain responds to verbal instructions, solves problems by logically and sequentially looking at the parts of things, tends to look at differences in things, is more planned and structured, prefers established certain information, prefers talking and writing, prefers multiple choice tests, and also the left hemisphere of the brain controls feelings. A recent study found that right handed people use the right side of the brain to focus on an entire image; however the left side of the brain is used to focus on the details within the image.

When you look at history, we’ve got some of the creative geniuses from the past, you’ve got Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and other names, they were clearly left-handed.

85 to 90 percent of the world’s population is right handed. Nine in every ten people are said to be right handed. On average, right handed people live nine years longer than left handed people. A good number of technological devices today are made primarily for right handed individuals, such as refrigerators, scissors, microwaves, can openers, button down shirts, guitars, and even military rifles.

Ambidextrous can also be taken to mean that you can do things equally with each hand,So if a individual is able to write and throw things equally with each hand, that person would be ambidextrous and is more prefer to call him mixed handed. I have seen many of my friends who are left handed eat and write with their left hand and play sport with their right. Although ambidexterity is rare at birth, it can be learned. The key in learning is to start paying attention to minor tasks and performing them with one’s opposite hand daily. While difficult at first, minor tasks like brushing teeth, opening doors, and eating will become steadily easier if a person keeps at it. Learning to write or throw with both hands is far harder, but with patience and practice, it is feasible for anybody to become proficient with both hands.
