Is Causing Childhood Obesity a Criminal Offense

Obesity is life threatening, while many kids do not die of obesity itself, this health issue spins off into many ailments and in most cases is 100% preventable. As such, should parents of obese children be charged with a crime?

If a child were found to be too thin, it would be removed from the home, and the parents charged with child neglect. Yet for some reason we allow parents to fatten up kids as though they were pigs going to the slaughter. Well to be fair, most of these kids are fatter than any pig would be, as no farmer would want an obese, unhealthy, animal.

Parents not only allow it but actually encourage it by feeding their children unhealthy food, and too much of it.

Part of this is that parents are showing love through food, part of it is because parents are afraid to say “NO” to their children, but a lot of it is pure laziness. Parents are too lazy to make sure their children are eating right and getting enough exercise. Some parents even blame schools for cutting out physical activity programs, but school only represents a small portion of a child’s life and time. Again, the problem is the parents.

How can we, as a society, condemn parents who have underweight, and underfed children and not equally condemn those who jeopardize their child’s health by stuffing it full of unhealthy food?

Obesity in adults, and children, costs us all. Fat kids suffer diabetes, bullying, and heart problems, worse, they grow into fat adults, and raise more fat children.

It is time lawmakers started charging adults who are fattening up their children with neglect. These parents have neglected correct feeding, they have neglected physical care of their children, and have neglected to teach these kids healthy eating – and exercise habits. There is no excuse, nobody forces a parent to feed their kid pop, when water is accessible.

Parents are currently afraid to discipline a child in public for fear of being labeled as an abusive parent, but is not allowing (in fact contributing to) a child to be unhealthy also an abuse?

YES – this page is going to offend people, but seriously if you are a parent, or worked in child welfare, you would not allow starvation of a child, so why is fattening them up so acceptable?

Allowing a child to become obese is currently not a crime, it should be.

Authors note: Some people argue that healthy food is expensive, as I raised by child on less than welfare families receive, I totally to disagree with this excuse (water is free, pop is expensive, less food is cheaper than more), but to go a step further, I would argue that if you cannot afford to feed children correctly, you should not have them.

  1. hey Nelson, back again? Long time no speak

  2. Nice article. One might be able to push the medical neglect issue with childhood obesity, but you’re right–very serious problem.

  3. A controversial view, but sometimes one has to say shocking things. I do think, though, that a child fat enough to be in immediate danger of their life (not just a higher long term risk) would be treated as seriously as a child starved to the point of immediate danger. Kids not quite THAT fat are probably in the same bracket as those starving themselves to achieve size zero, neither of which are currently thought to be in such immediate danger as to warrant being taken into care.

  4. I was shocked when I saw the title, but now that I read the article, I think it may be a good idea. Thanks for sharing these points.

  5. You make the excellent point that underweight children would be taken into care, and I totally agree the same should apply if children are obese.
The health and wellbeing of all children must always come first.
    Excellent knowledgeable article.

  6. Great post, i like it

  7. Alas, the art of cooking and nutritional training are sadly not high in priority. Most fat children have fat adults.

  8. I agree with your points and I also know it can be extremely expensive to feed healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. However, skip the ice cream, chips, pop, and use the fruits for dessert and fresh veggies for snacks and you can make it work.

I also want to point out there are many children who are deliberately kept underweight and from growing too much (gymnists for one) and the law does nothing.

  9. Hey…I liked your idea about charging the adults who make their kids obese.

  10. Very bold! Good share!

  11. Good point. Obesity is also child neglect and parental incompetence.

  12. great share! thanks
